Carling Cup semi-final results 2008-09
It will be Manchester United vs Spurs in the final. The two Premiership giants ended the dreams of Derby County and Burnley respectively to set up a pulsating final clash on the 1st of March at Wembley.
Derby County had beaten United 1-0 in the first leg of their semifinal at Pride Park, but the Rams were punished for not scoring more than once at home when United beat them 4-2 at Old Trafford in the second leg. United were in control for most of the game, although a late Derby surge did cause some panic in the ranks of the home supporters. However injuries to Rafael Da Silva, Jonny Evans and Anderson spoilt the game for the Red Devils, who are having a fair number of people in the physio’s room currently.
Tottenham lead 4-1 from the first leg at White Hart Lane, but the Lilywhites came very close to being dumped out of the tournament by Burnley at Turf Moor. Burnley scored the three goals they needed to force the game into extra time, but Spurs squeaked through into the final thanks to extra time goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe.
