FA Cup third round results - 13 January 2009
Holders Portsmouth beat plucky Bristol City 2-0, with goals in either half from Peter Crouch and Niko Kranjcar.
Jay Rodriguez scored in the last minute of extra time as QPR were knocked out in the third round for the fifth consecutive time running by Burnley at Turf Moor.
West Brom set up a fourth round clash with Burnley by seeing off the challenge of Petersborough 2-0. On loan striker Jay Simpson opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and Paul Robinson doubled West Brom’s lead twenty minutes later.
Non league Histon bowed out of the competition after losing 2-1 to Championship side Swansea. Gorka Pintado and Guillem Bauza put Swansea 2-0 ahead at the break, and the Swans were able to survive a tense last few minutes after Josh Simpson pulled one back for Histon in the 84th minute.
Darren Ambrose scored the only goal of the game as beleaguered Charlton Athletic won 1-0 against Norwich City at Carrow Road.
Birmingham City were beaten 2-0 at St.Andrews by Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Doncaster held on for a goalless draw with Cheltenham, while Millwall beat Crewe Alexandra 3-2 in a thrilling tie. Scott Barron, Neil Harris and Zak Whitbread scored for Millwall, while Luke Murphy and Shaun Miller were on target for Crewe. In the process, Harris became Millwall’s all time leading scorer, displacing Teddy Sheringham.
Sheffield United produced a second half four goal blitzkrieg to end Leyton Orient’s Cup dreams at Brisbane Road. Greg Halford scored twice for the Blades, with Kyle Naughton and Billy Sharp adding one each after JJ Melligan had put Orient ahead from the spot.
