We start off in Spain where leaders Barcelona were defeated 2-1 by local rivals Espanyol in the Catalan derby. Ex- Barcelona star Ivan de la Pena scored both goals for Espanyol while Yaya Toure got one back for Barcelona in the second half. Seydou Keita was sent off for a fragrant foul in the 39th minute and Eric Abidal limped off injured. Things got worse for Barcelona as Real Madrid smashed six past Betis and reduced the lead at the top of the table to seven points. Meanwhile, Samuel Eto’o came out in public and refuted all rumours that he could be leaving the Nou Camp in the summer for a new destination.

The leader board in Italy was virtually unchanged at the end of Matchday 25 as all Inter, AC Milan, Juventus and Roma all clocked up wins to maintain their respective positions at the top. Reports emanating out of Italy suggest that Juventus have made David Silva and Diego their top transfer targets for summer. Also, they are very keen on Antonio Cassano who they see as the heir to Del Piero’s throne and Simao Mate Junior of Panathanikos.

In France, PSG lost further ground on Lyon as they could manage only a goal less draw against a weak Grenoble side. Lyon continued their fine run as they brushed aside Nancy 2-0 to go six points clear at the top of the table. Marseille received a much needed boost as Mama Niang was cleared to play in their next UEFA Cup tie against FC Twente. On the other hand, Lyon have suspended Fred for a week with the unsettled striker’s protracted departure from the club still unresolved.
