Aston Villa 0-1 Chelsea ( Nicolas Anelka 19′)

Guus Hiddink started his Chelsea managerial career with a win as the Blues beat Aston Villa 1-0. Nicolas Anelka scored the only goal of the game, assisted by Frank Lampard. The result see the Blues go to third in the table. Villa are fourth with 51 points.

Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland

Andrei Arshavin made his much awaited debut for Arsenal but even the Russian playmaker could not stop Arsenal dropping points against Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium. The result leaves Arsenal a whopping seventeen points behind leaders Manchester United.

Bolton 2-1 West Ham ( Matt Taylor 10′, Kevin Davies 11′/ Scott Parker 66′)

Bolton got themselves some much need breathing space with a win over Gianfranco Zola’s West Ham  at the Reebok. Taylor struck a wonderful free kick to give the Trotters the lead, and Davies doubled it just seconds later by poking in Elmander’s cross.

Middlesbrough 0-0 Wigan

The second goalless game of the evening did not do much to help Boro’s chances of getting out of the relegation zone.

Stoke City 2-2 Portsmouth ( James Beattie 78′, 80′/ Niko Kranjcar 75′, Ryan Shawcross OG 90+2′)

This match at the Britannia Stadium came to life in the last fifteen minutes.  James Beattie’s brace seemed to have given the Potters all three points, but Ryan Shawcross put Hreidarsson’s injury time effort into his own goal to give Pompey a share of the spoils.

Manchester United 2-1 Blackburn Rovers ( Rooney 23′, Ronaldo 60′/ Roque Santa Cruz 32′)

A blistering freekick from Cristiano Ronaldo saw Manchester United extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points and heaped pressure on Liverpool ahead of their game against Manchester City. Blackburn became the first team to score against United in the league since November. Although Sam Allardyce’s men gave United a run for their money, they could not stop the Red Devils from emerging 2-1 winners.
