Veteran striker Fillippo Inzaghi struck a hat trick as Milan beat Atalanta 3-0 to give coach Carlo Ancelotti some much needed breathing space.
However as Juventus and Inter both won their weekend games, Milan are still five and twelve points behind Juve and leaders Inter respectively.
David Beckham’s stay in Italy was confirmed on the same day, and the English midfielder played exceptionally well, and set up several opportunities for Milan’s forward line.
Beckham was involved in the build up play for Milan’s first goal, which saw Alexandre Pato’s deflected shot being collected by Marek Jankulovski, who then slid the ball across the box for an unmarked Inzaghi to fire home with his left foot.
Milan’s second goal came in the 71st minute. Pato lifted the ball over the Atalanta defence, and Inzaghi reached and turned the ball away from the advancing Andrea Consigli before slotting home into an empty net.
Inzaghi claimed his hat trick three minutes later. Zambrotta advanced down the left flank, and played a one two with Jankulovski before putting the ball into the path of Inzaghi, who had the simple job of an easy tap in with no Atalanta player standing between him and the goal.
