Champions League first leg results- April 7
Here are the results from the first leg Champion League quarterfinal games played on April 7, 2009 ( Tuesday)
Manchester United 2-2 FC Porto ( Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez/ Cristian Rodriguez, Mariano Gonzalez)
Porto grabbed two precious away goals at the Theatre of Dreams, and Sir Alex Ferguson’s men will now have to do what no English team has managed to do so far- win at Porto’s Stadium of Light.
Cristian Rodriguez took advantage of some poor defending from Jonny Evans to give Porto the lead, but an even more shocking piece of defending from Bruno Alves saw Porto gift United an equaliser. Carlos Tevez came off the bench and seemed to have won it for United, but the industrious Lisandro Lopez set up Mariano Gonzalez for Porto’s second goal to spark celebrations in the Portuguese camp.
Villareal 1-1 Arsenal ( Marcos Senna/ Emmanuel Adebayor)
Not the result Arsenal would have wanted, but they’ll take it all the same. Villareal skipper Marcos Senna gave the Yellow Submarines an early lead with a stunning long range effort. Despite losing both Manuel Almunia and William Gallas to injury, Arsenal managed to find an equaliser through Togo international Adebayor, and that is how things ended at El Madrigal.
