Chelsea win battle of the Blues at Wembley

May 31st, 2009 by football writer

Chelsea claimed a 2-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup final. Wembley was a sea of Blue as the two sides took to the pitch and the fans didnt have to wait long for the first action. Everton took the lead after just 25 seconds, the quickest ever FA Cup final goal. Louis Saha struck a brilliant effort, after Marouane Fellaini had headed the ball back into the penalty area. It was just the sensational start that the big occasion deserved.

Everton’s early lead didn’t last long as Chelsea took control of the game and attacked again and again down the Everton right, through Florent Malouda. And it was the Frenchman who produced an excellent cross for Didier Drogba to powerfully head Chelsea back onto level terms in the 21st minute.

Everton addressed the problem of Chelsea attacking down their right by replacing right back Tony Hibbert with Dane Lars Jacobsen, but Ashley Cole and the outstanding Florent Malouda continued to cause problems. Everton got back into the game in the second half and goal scorer Louis Saha headed a chance over the bar when well placed.

Within a few minutes of Saha’s miss, Chelsea took the lead through a superb 25 yard drive from Frank Lampard, after the England midfielder had taken on Phil Neville on the edge of the box. Florent Malouda was then denied a third goal for Chelsea in the 80th minute, after his stunning long range effort hit the underside of the crossbar and replays showed that the ball crossed the line. It mattered little though, as Guus Hiddink bid farewell to the Chelsea job with a FA Cup victory.
