Premier League Review
As we trudge on to September we are still no closer to knowing who will triumph come May; although Chelsea are fast becoming the bookies favorites. Another efficient performances as they swept away giant killing Burnley 3-0 with goals from Anelka, Ballack and Ashley Cole means that Carlo Ancelotti’s men now have maximum points and sit proudly at the top of the table.
Elsewhere Liverpool continued their worrying defensive fragility as they twice came from behind to secure a 2-3 away win against Bolton. Only Steven Gerrard’s thunderbolt late on prevented another humiliation for Rafa’s Reds. The criticisms of zonal marking look set to continue for some time yet.
Harry Redknapp has presided over a renaissance at White Hart Lane and they continued their 100% start to the season – but only just. 1-1 into the 95 minute against Birmingham (which saw Peter Crouch open his Tottenham account) and it was down to Aaron Lennon to save the day and win the 3 points for a Spurs team that looks increasingly like they will be challenging the top 4 this season.
Lastly we go to Old Trafford where the first Top 4 clash of the season took place that, as usual, had its fair share of controversy. A 2-1 united win was overshadowed by a blatant penalty being denied to Arsenal, Wenger’s ‘anti-football’ comments and then the laughable inability of the officials to keep a lid on the game in the dying stages as the Arsenal manager was sent off for the heinous crime of kicking a water bottle. Fergie may have won this battle but it was Wenger that has made all the headlines since.
