Premier League roundup - 29 November 2009

November 29th, 2009 by football writer

Chelsea had lost to Arsenal only once in their last five visits prior to this Sunday’s derby, and the Blues racked up their 12th win in fourteen games by beating the Gunners 3-0. Ivory Coast skipper Didier Drogba scored two of those three, continuing his excellent scoring record against Arsene Wenger’s side.

There was no winning start for new Pompey boss Avram Grant as his side went down 4-1 to Manchester United at Fratton Park. Ryan Giggs scored his 100th Premier League goal in the game, with Wayne Rooney bagging a hat trick.

Liverpool picked up some much needed points by beating local rivals Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside derby.

Wigan recovered from the 9-1 thrashing dished out to them by Spurs to beat Sunderland 1-0 at home. But Burnley’s poor form on the road continued as they were beaten 5-3 by West Ham United. Wolves were beaten 1-0 at Molineux by Birmingham City, while Manchester City played out their seventh straight league draw against Phil Brown’s Hull City. Robinho made his return from injury for City in that game.

Elsewhere, Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur were involved in a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane. The scoreline was the same at Craven Cottage, where Roy Hodgson’s Fulham drew against Bolton Wanderers. The game between Blackburn and Stoke at Ewood Park ended 0-0- the only fixture on the weekend not to produce even a single goal.
