Premier League Preview – Jan 16/17
The lunchtime kickoff on Saturday sees Liverpool travel to the Britannia Stadium to play Stoke. Liverpool were booted out of the FA Cup by Reading in midweek and have lost Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to injury. Yossi Benayoun and Glen Johnson are also unfit. New signing Maxi Rodriguez will get a start and Mascherano is available for selection after serving a suspension. Stoke are nearly full strength with Sanli Tuncay being the only absentee because of a hamstring problem.
Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea will start as strong favourites against Sunderland at home. A win would see them extend their lead at the top of the table by four points. Chelsea are without the services of Deco and Bosingwa who are out with injury. Drogba, Kalou, Essien, Mikel are away at the CAN. Sunderland have secured only 5 points out of a possible 30 on their travels. They will be without John Mensah, Lee Cattermole, Craig Gordon and Andy Reid.
Burnley’s new manager Brian Laws’ first test is an away trip to Old Trafford. The injury crisis at United is showing signs of improvement. Only Ferdinand, O’Shea and Hargreaves are definitely out of the tie. Berbatov, Nani, Vidic, Foster may all make an appearance either from the start or on the bench. Darren Fletcher is suspended following his red card against Birmingham. Burnley who lie just two points above the drop zone have a Herculean task on their hands.
Avram Grant’s Portsmouth host an in-form Birmingham City at Fratton Park. Grant will not have the services of Kanu, Dindane,Yebda and Belhadj who are playing the CAN. Alex Mcleish will be hoping to build on the draw against United last week. But he would be without Carsley, O’Connor, Murphy and Tainio. Another bottom of the table clash sees Wolves host Wigan. A win for either side would prove to be a big boost for their survival campaign.
Tottenham host Hull at White Hart Lane knowing that a win could put them back into the top four till Manchester City play against Everton. Redknapp will be without Aaron Lennon, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Woodgate and Cudicini. Hull would find the going tough especially without the inspirational Jimmy Bullard in midfield.
The late kick-off on Saturday is at Goodison Park where Everton host high-flying Manchester City. Both sides are blighted by injuries. Everton are without Tony Hibbert, Jack Rodwell, Dan Gosling, Sylvain Distin, Victor Anichebe, Phil Jagielka and Mikel Arteta. Yobo and Yakubu are away at CAN. City have niggling injury concerns over Santa Cruz, Wright-Phillips, Onouha, Lescott and Bridge.
Sunday’s first game takes us to Villa Park where Villa host Zola’s West Ham. Villa won the first leg of their Carling Cup tie against Rovers. While Villa have a full squad to choose from with the exception of Curtis Davies, West Ham are without Carlton Cole, Zavon Hines, Kieron Dyer and Danny Gabbidon. The second game on Sunday is a mid-table affair between Blackburn and Fulham. Both teams will be pushing to consolidate their position in the table.
The last game of the week sees Arsenal travel to Bolton. Owen Coyle will face a sterling test in his very first game as manager. Arsenal welcome back their captain Cesc Fabregas who has recovered from his hamstring problem. Clichy, Wilshere, van Persie, Denilson, Walcott are missing with injuries.
