It was a happy weekend for the city of Manchester as both teams from the city won their Premier League games at the expense of their rivals from the North East.

Manchester United ran out convincing 2-0 winners over European hopefuls Sunderland thanks to Dimitar Berbatov’s double while Newcastle United lost 3-1 at home to Roberto Mancini’s Man City. United were dominant against Steve Bruce’s Wearsiders and should have won by more than just the two goals they scored. City again had talismanic skipper Carlos Tevez to thank for their victory over the Magpies.

At the Reebok, Matt Taylor’s first league goal of the season and Johan Elmander’s ninth strike of the season saw Bolton beat West Brom 2-0. However neighbours Blackburn Rovers could not do the same at Ewood Park as they went down to Stoke City.

West Ham put a serious question mark over Mark Hughes’ future at Fulham as they completed a comeback 3-1 win at Craven Cottage, with Carlton Cole scoring his first ever Premier League brace.

Elsewhere, Wigan gave themselves some breathing space in the bottom half with a precious 2-1 away win at Molineux against Wolves. Tottenham Hotspur again showed their fighting qualities as they grabbed a 2-1 win away at Villa Park despite being reduced to ten men in the first half. Dutch playmaker Rafael Van der Vaart scored both goals for Spurs.

There was no Christmas football for folks on Merseyside as both Liverpool and Everton had their respective league games against Blackpool and Birmingham cancelled.

Arsenal secured a big psychological win as they beat London rivals Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Monday night. Alex Song gave the Gunners the lead on the stroke of half time and early second half strikes from skipper Fabregas and forward Theo Walcott confirmed victory for Arsene Wenger’s men against the Blues.
