Manchester City 1-2 Everton
Manchester City missed out on the opportunity to go into Christmas as Premier League leaders as they went down 2-1 at home to David Moyes’ Everton on Monday night.
The fixture, only one of four in Round 18 to survive the cold wave sweeping the country, saw Everton take the lead in the fourth minute through Tim Cahill. City’s defence went to sleep as Coleman crossed the ball for the Australian to head in at the near post.
If Everton’s first goal had some poor City defending to thank for, their second goal was nothing but sheer class. Victor Anichebe crossed the ball into the box to Cahill, who laid the ball off to Leighton Baines to curl home.
City, for all their possession, did not threaten Tim Howard too much in the first half, but came out all guns blazing in the second. Everton’s task was made more difficult by the dismissal of Anichebe for two quick yellow cards but the Toffees, marshalled superbly by American stopper Tim Howard, managed to keep City’s superstars at bay.
The home side did manage to pull one back when Yaya Toure’s effort was deflected in by Phil Jagielka. Mario Balotelli hit the post later in the game and Howard did fabulously well to block Tevez’s effort off the rebound.
City had one final chance in stoppage time through Tevez, but Howard was again equal to the task, and the home side’s evening ended on a poor note when Kolo Toure was shown his marching orders by the referee.
