Only Manchester United and Arsenal were able to secure wins on the road as six of the eight Premier League games on New Years’ Day ended in favour of the home side.

First up was United’s trip to the Hawthorns to take on West Brom and the Red Devils began the lunch time fixture in stunning fashion by taking the lead in the 2nd minute through Wayne Rooney.

However United took it easy after the goal and West Brom’ free flowing style of football cause plenty of problems for Sir Alex’s men. A superb volley from James Morrison drew the Baggies level and they were unlucky not to be given a penalty when Gary Neville appeared to clearly foul Graham Dorrans in the box.

West Brom did get a penalty in the second half thanks to the efforts of Jerome Thomas but Peter Odemwingie made a hash of it as he sent his shot wide. United are not a team to look a gift horse in the mouth and substitute Javier Hernandez punished the Midlands outfit for some sloppy defending by heading home the winner from a corner.

Liverpool grabbed a second half comeback win over Bolton at Anfield, much to the relief of their beleaguered coach Roy Hodgson. An early second half strike from Fernando Torres and an injury time goal from Joe Cole helped the Reds banish the memories of their painful midweek defeat to Wolves.

Tottenham made it three wins out of as many games over the festive period as they beat neighbours Fulham 1-0 thanks to Gareth Bale’s first half header. Fellow European hopefuls Sunderland also grabbed a victory as they comfortably beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.

At Eastlands, Man City completed the double over Ian Holloway’s Blackpool thanks to a solitary Adam Johnson goal. While it was joy for the Red half of Merseyside, there was no such gift for the Blue half as Everton went down 2-0 to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

West Ham beat fellow strugglers Wolves 2-0 to rise five places in the league to fifteenth. However Birmingham City remained in the relegation zone as they suffered a rare defeat at St.Andrews’ to Arsenal, with the Gunners producing an excellent performance to run out 3-0 winners.
