Southampton 2-3 Charlton Athletic
Charlton Athletic heaped more misery upon beleaguered Southampton as they won 3-2 in the Championship fixture between the two sides at St.Mary’s on Saturday.
With Southampton’s future looking uncertain after the parent company went into administration, a record home crowd watched the Saints slump to a 3-2 defeat against the Addicks.
Youngster Jonjo Shelvey gave Charlton the lead in the 17th minute, but David McGoldrick’s magnificient strike levelled scores. Saints keeper Kelvin Davis then saved a penalty from Tresor Kandol as Charlton missed the opportunity to take the lead.
However Shelvey’s fellow midfielders, Therry Recon and Nicky Bailey put the game beyond Southampton’s reach in the second half, and although Bradley Wright Phillips raised the home crowd’s hopes by pulling one back six minutes before time, Charlton were not to be denied victory.
