Premier League Midweek Review
Tottenham consolidated their fourth placed position with a 2-0 win at home against Fulham. In a very cagey first half, some good work by Luka Modric set up Crouch in the area who opened the scoring. Later in the second half, David Bentley doubled the lead with a deflected free-kick from the edge of the area.
Liverpool’s miserable run continued as they were held to a goal less draw by Wolves at Molineux. Liverpool named an attacking side with Maxi Rodriguez making his full debut. But Mick McCarthy’s men put in a spirited performance to earn a vital point which sees them climb out of the bottom three. Ronald Zubar’s impressive performance at right back won him the player of the match award.
There was sweet revenge for Owen Coyle as he guided Bolton to a crucial 1-0 win over Burnley at the Reebok Stadium. The win saw Bolton climb out of the relegation zone and Coyle’s previous team slip into the bottom three. Lee Chung-Yong’s well taken goal on 33 minutes proved to be the difference between the two teams.
Finally, we move to Fratton Park where relegation candidates West Ham and Portsmouth battled to a 1-1 draw. Matthew Upson’s header gave the Hammers a 1-0 lead early in the second half but Portsmouth clawed their way back into the game and rescued a point thanks to a Danny Webber goal. Pompey keeper Asmir Begovic was the star of the show as he made one save after another to keep the bottom club in the game.
